WINDOWS VISTA ISSUES

Some Vista users have reported problems of not being able to download EXE programs from the internet, not being able to install EXE programs to their hard drives from a CD or a download file, or in some cases, not being able to run EXE programs directly from the CD. This applies to programs from many non-Microsoft vendors, not just CarleySoftware.

First I'd like to personally thank Bill Gates for creating this problem by pushing his latest piece-o-crap, bug-filled Vista operating system off on us so he can earn billions more to give away to the poor starving Africans.

The problem is that the WINDOWS DEFENDER program in certain versions of Vista blocks all EXE programs and will prevent an EXE program file from running. This is supposedly done to protect your computer from viruses, spyware and malware, but the real intent I think is to make it a royal pain-in-the-ass to install and run software that does not come from Microsoft (thanks again, Bill).

How To Get Vista to Accept an EXE file Download from the Internet

If you are unable to download a program (EXE) file from CarleySoftware, let me know and I will rename the file extension from EXE to AAA before it is zipped up in a zip file. I will then resend you the download file. This will allow you to download and open the zip file without Windows Defender blocking it.

After you open the zip file, you will have to rename the file extension from AAA back to EXE.

Once this has been done, see below for how to get Vista to "accept" the EXE file.

How to Get Vista to Run an EXE file (open and run a program file)

1. Right click on the program file name.
2. Click on PROPERTIES.
3. Click on UNBLOCK button (this will turn the button gray and disable the blocking feature on the program).
4. Click on APPLY.
5. Cross your fingers, and hope this works.

Here's another technique that may solve the problem:

1. Select "Windows Defender" from the Start Menu:All Programs.
2. Click Tools
3. Click Software Explorer
4. Select the program you want to run and click the "Enable" button.

Try Running The Program in Windows XP Compatibility Mode:

When you select the compatibility mode option, Windows Vista emulates the selected operating system when you run that particular program. To run the program in compatibility mode, follow these steps:

1. Click Start Start button , and then type the name of the program in the Start Search box.
2. In the Programs list, right-click the program name, and then click Properties.
3. On the Compatibility tab, click to select the Run this program in compatibility mode for check box.
4. In the list, select an operating system, and then click OK.

If the program still does not work correctly, go to the next method.

Method 2: Run the program as an administrator

To run the program as an administrator, follow these steps:

1. Click Start Start button , and then type the name of the program in the Start Search box.

2. In the Programs list, right-click the program that you are troubleshooting, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

If the program now runs correctly, the program requires administrative permissions to function. For more information about how to force a program to automatically run with administrative permissions, see the "Step 2: Run the program as an administrator" section of the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: 931362

The Ultimate Solution: Turn Windows Defender OFF !!!!

3. Select Options.
4. Scroll to bottom of list

6. Click SAVE
7. When the UAC prompt appears, click continue.
8. When the window appears notifying you that Defender has been turned off, close the window.

SOFTWARE INSTALLATION HELP FOR WINDOWS XP

NOTE: Most Carley software programs are designed to run directly from the CD with no installation required. If you wish, you may copy the programs from the CD to your PC hard drive using the following procedures.

Restrictions: You may copy the software to your own PCs (any number within reason)

But please DO NOT share software with friends or allow friends to copy software.

HOW TO INSTALL

You can use one of these methods to copy the software from the CD to your own computer :

Method 1: Place the CD in your CD drive. Then use Windows Explorer to Edit, Copy and Paste the program files on the CD to a folder on your hard drive (see Windows Help for information on how to do this).

NOTE: Windows drag and drop does NOT work with EXE program files. It only creates a short cut.

Click on Windows Explorer, click on MY COMPUTER, then click on your CD drive (usually DRIVE D but the letter designation may be different depending on your PC). Then go to the menu bar at the top of the screen, click EDIT, then SELECT ALL, the COPY. Then click on your hard drive (Usually DRIVE C). Then go back up to the menu bar at the top of the screen, click FILE, click NEW, and click FOLDER . Name the folder Carley or what ever you want to call it. Then click on the new folder you just created, go back to the menu bar again and click EDIT and PASTE. The program files should now copy to your hard drive.

To create a shortcut to the main program menu on your Windows Desktop, go to your Windows Desktop, RIGHT CLICK your mouse anywhere on the screen, then choose NEW and SHORTCUT from the menu that pops up. Click on BROWSE, click on MY COMPUTER, find the new folder you just created (Carley), and click on any of the program files. This will create a desktop shortcut directly to the program.

Method 2: (MUCH EASIER!!!): The files can also be copied from the CD to your hard drive using DOS commands. On your Windows Start/Programs/Accessories menu, click on Command Prompt (C:). This will open a black DOS window. Type the following command: md c:\carley and press enter. This will create a folder (directory) on your hard drive C called carley.

Then type this command: xcopy d:\*.* /s c:\carley and press enter.

(Note: there is one space between *.* and /s, and one space between /s and c:\carley). This will copy all of the program files on the CD in Drive D to the carley folder on your hard drive. If you wish, you can use a different folder name instead of carley in these command lines. Also, if your CD drive has a different letter designation, use that letter instead of D.

This should create a desktop shortcut directly to the program(s).
