If you are looking for a very detailed, in-depth performance how-to book for late model General Motors LS-Series Engines, this is it! Whether you are a first-time engine builder or a pro, this book does an excellent job of covering the essentials of building a performance LS engine.
Chapters cover the engine block, rotating assembly, cylinder heads, camshafts and hardware, engine machining, short block assembly and setup, long block assembly and inspection, and finishing the long block for its installation and initial startup. There is also a reference section covering bolt and torque specifications for the LS engines (1997 to 2009).
This is a very hands-on type of book. In the block section, for example, it even covers the recommended top and 2nd piston ring end gaps for various kinds of applications such as street performance, race only and boosted engines. In the section on engine assembly, the book covers how to set the intake and exhaust valve clearances, and how much clearance is recommended, and how to determine the proper pushrod length with aftermarket performance camshafts. It also walks the reader through the step-by-step procedures for installing and torquing the cylinder heads, head bolts and engine covers. In short, it covers all of the essentials and leaves nothing out.
I consider this book to be a "must read" for anyone who wants to rebuild or assemble GM LS engines.
The book is fully illustrated with high quality color photos. My only criticism of this book is that it should have been spiral bound rather than perfect bound. That would allow the pages to lay flat for easeir viewing while assembling an engine.
